The mission of the World Bank and the Council of Europe Development Bank in the framework of the execution of the Oder and Vistula River Basin Flood Protection Project

Oder and Vistula. In the course of the Mission, a number of meetings and field visits to selected land construction contracts were organised. Attending the meetings were the representatives of: Ministry of Infrastructure, Ministry of Development Funds and Regional Policy, Ministry of Climate and Environment, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of the Interior and Administration, State Water Holding Wody Polskie, including representatives of the National Water Holding Board, also directors of Regional Water Holding Boards in Kraków, Wrocław and Szczecin, IMGW-PIB together with Project Execution Units and representatives of Contractors and Technical Support Consultants.

Members of the mission were positive about the progress and advancement of work in all components of the Project, recognising at the same time the very high level of commitment and effectiveness in the light of the impact of both the conditions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the current geopolitical situation.

The POPDOW covers flood protection investments in the zachodniopomorskie, lubuskie, dolnośląskie, śląskie, małopolskie, podkarpackie, mazowieckie and świętokrzyskie voivodeships, the execution of which contributes to improving the safety of the population living in the Odra and Upper Vistula river basins.  There is a total of almost PLN 4 billion worth of contracted construction work and services. Each year brings further challenges and hardships which have been tackled in order to maintain the pace of the implementation of the Project. Between 2020 and 2021, 33 construction and supply contracts were signed, significantly accelerating the Project’s execution, in spite of major setbacks related to the geopolitical and economic situation in addition to the negative impact of COVID-19.
