More than 13,000 residents and an area of around 570 000 square metres will be directly protected by the reconstruction of the flood embankments.
The planned and executed works consisted, among other things, in the extension of approx. 10 km of flood embankments in the estuary section of the Łęg River, i.e. the raising of the existing embankment crest, the change of the geometry of the cross-section of the embankments, the thickening and tightening of the embankments’ body and their base. In addition to this, the existing flood protection infrastructure was also rebuilt, i.e. among others the embankment locks, culverts and embankment crossings. High and medium voltage overhead lines were also rebuilt.
The total cost of the works amounted to around PLN 71 million and the construction works took more than two years.
The task also included the reconstruction of the pumping station. The scope of work included the reconstruction of the inflow channel, compensation tank, pumping station building, replacement of pumps, pumping pipelines, outlet to the outflow channel, outflow channel to the Łęg River and installation of modern control and measurement equipment. Modern Flygt pumps and an additional spare pump were installed. The discharge pipelines, which were in poor condition, were also replaced. The pumping station was equipped with a generator to ensure power supply in the event of power cuts and fully automated screenings reception at the pumping station inlet. The facility now operates fully automatically based on a control panel installed at the Water Authority in Tarnobrzeg and alternatively at the pumping station building.
The reconstruction of the flood control embankments of the Łęg River in the municipality of Gorzyce is part of the activities of the Polish Waters under the Odra-Vistula Flood Management – OVFMP. It consists of 60 different investments, covering the area experiencing the biggest risk of flooding: Lower Silesia, Upper Silesia, Lesser Poland, Podkarpacie and the Lower Odra region. The system is ultimately intended to protect 15 million Poles. OVFMP is financed by the World Bank and EU funds, with participation of the state budget and its total value is PLN 5.5 billion.
