The Boboszów reservoir is another element of flood protection in the area, which was heavily affected by flooding in 1997. The capacity of the reservoir is 1.4 million m3 , and the area of the inundation at maximum damming reaches 21 ha. The facility directly protects 1,200 residents in the surrounding area. During the works, more than 800,000 tonnes of embankment weight were made and the reservoir dam reached a total length of 756 m. Some 32,000 transports of materials had to be made to complete the task!
Importantly, the environmental element was also taken care of in the construction of the reservoir. More than 85% of the reservoir’s bowl is left in its natural state. The structure of the facility allows the migration of fish, granite chambers for bats have been created. More than 7,500 trees and nearly 6,600 bushes were planted, and 260 nesting boxes for birds of various species, 42 bat boxes and a nesting platform for black stork were hung.
The investment worth PLN 237 million is part of the activities of the Polish Waters within the Odra-Vistula Flood Management Project (OVFMP). It consists of 60 different investments, covering the area experiencing the biggest risk of flooding: Lower Silesia, Upper Silesia, Lesser Poland, Podkarpacie and the Lower Odra region. The system is ultimately intended to protect 15 million Poles. OVFMP is financed by the World Bank and EU funds, with participation of the state budget and its total value is PLN 5.5 billion.
